To determine if your child requires anesthesia, It depends on the anxiety level and pain threshold of the child. Some children can not bear the thoughts of a simple dental cleaning, while others have abscessed teeth extracted or root canals performed without the slightest discomfort.  It is normally best not to tell your child that any part of their treatment will or will not produce discomfort or pain.  Instead, allow your dentist the opportunity to explain the treatment to your child and gain their confidence.
